MICHAEL CUNNINHAM
NBA ALL STAR GAME
HONURARY BALL BOY
Wednesday, March 20,
1993, 25 years ago, the Wilmington News Journal carried a
story about Michael
Cunningham, then 13 years old, going to Peeples at Rehoboth Mall
with his grandmother,
Sarah, where there was a box for entries in the Levi's Big Shot
Sweepstakes with the top
prize an all expense paid trip for four family members to the
weekend of the NBA All
Star Game in Salt Lake City.
It did not cost anything,
so he entered his name on the entry blank and deposited it in the
entry box.
Later, his father, a
Delaware State Trooper, got mail that his son was a winner in the
Levi's
Contest. They did not say
it was the grand prize, just a winner. Winners received a
basketball
and official NBA pin. A
chance of winning was 310,000 to 1 and Michael was randomly
chosen as grand prize
winner.
The trip was an experience
of a lifetime dream come true. At Salt Lake the weekend included
an old timers game, a three
point shoot out, and slam dunk contest, plus the All Star Game
where the winner was
honorary ball boy. Mike got Larry Johnson converse sneakers, a NBA
jacket, pants and shirt.
He also received a baseball cap that he had autographed by the
Western Conference all
Stars and Julius Erving who was o the same flight back home.
