1940
Lewes, Delaware
Wednesday, October 9, 1940
An over aged U.S. Navy
destroyer traded to the British Navy is now the H.M.S. Lewes
named by Great Britains
Navy, after historical towns of America.
Lewes, Sussex County,
Delaware, was chosen since the town was the birthplace of Delaware
on the Delaware in 1631,
named Lewes in 1682 by William Penn after his native town in
England, Lewes, Sussex,
England.
American Legion Post 5,
Rehoboth-Lewes, has taken this as an honor and asked for
contribution to fund Yule
Tide Gift boxes for the crew and officers of H.M.S. Lewes this
Christmas time.
Past Post commander,
Benjamin Albertson , of Lewes will receive donations from Lewes
residents as will Bill
Bean of Rehoboth be custodian of gifts of Rehoboth residents.
Gifts of clothing must be
British Navy regulation but don't overlook usual Yule gifts and
sweets.
