AND THE LEWES SAND DUNES
The Cape Henlopen sand
dunes are fast becoming a garbage dump according to John Stenger, a
Lewes High School science teacher who has a lot to say and knows
people call him a crackpot yelling about a pile of sand.
The town had opened a tract
out here in the 'dunes' for a garbage dump several years ago and
also allow contractors to
remove sand for construction. A derelict crane, rusting away,
sitting atop a dune and fresh tracks ftom excavating equipment bears
mute testimony to activities.
Stenger fears he is
fighting a loosing battle but when he found rotten chicken cages
thrown on the dunes , he got mad and felt guilty for not publicizing
the situation sooner. He is also far from
optimistic of any results
and notes his 'crusade' is not making him very popular in such a
small town as Lewes, but he is determined to bring attention to the
matter. He has written Interior Secretary Udall, Mrs Lyndon Johnson
and Governor Terry. Town officials are not much help.
